Some Bronx community-based day care providers are furious over a City Council decision to only fund Administration for Children's Services-run programs.
The City Council recently allocated $5 million to fund Universal Pre-Kindergarten programs that are contracted by ACS in 2008. Other day care providers who offer the same extended hours argue their programs also deserve assistance.
"We believe in what we're doing," a day care provider said. "We're educating New York City children. We're preparing them for a better life ... but we need the money to continue."
Child care advocates claim the lack of funding has caused several day cares to cut back on services, causing parents to transfer children to ACS-sponsored programs.
Community leaders are meeting with elected officials to ensure they stay on the City Council's radar for future budget talks.
