A city councilman is aiming to make his district safer with the installation of nearly two dozen new surveillance cameras. Councilman Fernando Cabrera (D-District 14) says 20 cameras will be installed at 19 locations across University Heights and Morris Heights. He says they will target areas with high rates of prostitution and car vandalism. The cameras will cost $600,000 in total. The high-definition cameras can cover a two-block radius and will constantly send footage to NYPD headquarters. Cabrera says he is still working to finalize all of the locations, but that he wants all cameras up and running by the end of the year. He also says he would like to double the number of cameras in 2013 and have one installed outside every NYCHA building in his district.
