Federal and state officials have reached a $25 billion deal over foreclosure abuses, lending a helping hand to Bronx residents struggling with their mortgage payments. The settlement mandates that homeowners who took out mortgage loans between 2008 and 2011 are eligible for cash payments ranging from $1,500 to $2,000. Borrowers who owe more than their home is worth and who are current on their loan payments will qualify to refinance. Some Bronx residents say they are eager for the assistance after years of phone calls and collection letters. Of the state's 62 counties, The Bronx has the ninth highest foreclosure rate, according to bank officials. Letters will be sent out to homeowners in the coming weeks.
