Officials today announced new security measures to lower crime at the Throggs Neck and Pelham Parkway houses. Councilman Jimmy Vacca (D-13) is spending $1.6 million of his capital funds on security cameras for Throggs Neck and Pelham Parkway houses. He's also committing an additional $3 million over the next three years to the security systems. Both Vacca and tenants say they believe the new cameras will reduce crime at the nearly 3,000 units, as well as help identify suspects in its aftermath. Tenants have been demanding tightened security ever since 88-year-old Evelyn Shapiro was brutally murdered in her fifth-floor apartment in the Pelham Parkway Houses last month. Vacca says he's confident that camera installation will begin early next year.
