Canarsie residents still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy rallied Monday at City Hall asking for help to get the repairs they need.
Molly Griffiths says her basement was flooded with 7 feet of water as the storm swept through two years ago. She now says rats, roaches and rainwater come in through all the holes left in her house after the storm. She also says she has health problems from the mold left over.
Griffiths has lots of repairs that need to be done, but says she has been getting a hard time from the city's Build It Back program. Griffiths claims the program keeps asking her for paperwork and receipts to prove her house was damaged. Residents at the rally are calling on Build It Back to cut the red tape so they can get the repairs done and get their lives back to normal.
In a statement, a representative from the Build It Back program says, "What has made Build It Back work since the mayor's overhaul is increased flexibility for homeowners, increased communication with homeowners and an increased presence by our staff in Sandy-impacted communities. We have expanded our outreach to Canarsie...and have made over 500 offers to Canarsie residents."
