At the Meyer Levin School in Canarsie, discussing the importance of Juneteenth isn’t just a one-day event, but part of its ongoing curriculum.

During its Juneteenth celebration, 150 students took part in educational and cultural activities.

"We're talking about Juneteenth in a way that culminates and brings our historical experience together," Jamie Hendrickson, principal of Meyer Levin School explained. "But also giving students voice to connect to our current curriculum."

In the auditorium, the school utilized the Socratic seminar method, with students leading a discussion on stage about the Black Wall Street massacre and the murder of George Floyd.

"Most if not all those topics were very serious and very important to discuss," said Ewan Brown, a student at Meyer Levin.

In the gym, students presented projects, ate traditional African-American cuisine and enjoyed performances.

"Juneteenth can be very deep but can also be very happy at the same time,” said Erica Alouidor, a student at Meyer Levin.
