A fire that tore through a mixed-use building in Central Valley on Thursday night has displaced several families and forced a local restaurant to close just days before the holidays.
The fire broke out just after 6:21 p.m. at the building on Smith Clove Road, which houses Jorge’s Kitchen on the first floor and apartments above it. A neighbor tells News 12 there were five units inside.
Fire officials confirm a dog died in the fire.
Flames began in a third-floor apartment and spread through the upper levels. Firefighters from Woodbury and several surrounding departments remained on scene until after 11 p.m. working to knock down the two-alarm blaze.
News 12 spoke Friday with Omar Ferreira, who was helping his girlfriend pack up her belongings after living in the building for four years.
“This is terrible. This is horrible,” Ferreira said. “This is a really difficult thing to see and have to live through and have to do — but we have no other choice.”
Ferreira said residents spent the day pulling out what they could. “Everybody is moving their stuff out now,” he said, adding that the roof is collapsing from the damage.
According to residents, the building inspector allowed tenants to briefly re-enter Friday to collect essential items after the flames were out.
Woodbury Fire Chief Christopher Burke tells News 12 the Red Cross housed two families, while several others are staying with relatives. He said he does not yet have a complete count of how many apartments were occupied.
Burke says early indications point to an overloaded power strip as the possible cause, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Jorge’s Kitchen announced it will remain closed until further notice. The business says it is still fulfilling existing catering and food orders by preparing them at its other location. Customers can pick up at Bourbon on Mill Pond Parkway in Monroe or request delivery. Anyone with questions can call 845-827-6658 for Jorge’s Kitchen or 845-238-2207 for Bourbon.
No injuries to residents or firefighters have been reported.
Authorities have not yet released an official cause.
