A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by police Saturday morning in the Bronx after putting his mother in a headlock and a kitchen knife to her throat, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.
The “chaotic” incident happened inside an apartment on the 13th floor of 2865 Crescent Ave. in Bedford Park.
Chell says two officers out of the 52nd Precinct arrived at the building when a 19-year-old came "screaming out of the apartment with apparent slice wounds to the facial area."
Inside, they found "a subject holding his mother in a front headlock with a large carving knife to her throat.” He says she was clearly injured and bleeding.
Chell says officers gave numerous commands to the 30-year-old man, who was not named, to drop the knife before an officer discharged his weapon, striking the man in the head.
The officer rendered aid to the man, who died at a hospital. Chell says the two officers, with just over two years on the job, saved the family from further harm.
It’s not clear yet what led up to the confrontation. Chell says there were documented incidents of domestic violence at the apartment.
