The Rugged Cross Baptist Church is handing out early Thanksgiving meals this weekend as a way to thank parishioners for remaining loyal during renovations, which began almost a decade ago.
The historic church in Bedford-Stuyvesant has been active for more than a century. Services have been held downstairs in the church's basement since renovations began in its main sanctuary in 2006.
Funds from city grants and private donations kept the renovations going. After a new ceiling and windows are installed, the last phase will be to paint the back wall with murals.
The church says it expects the last phase to be completed by the end of next summer. Until then, it will keep holding services in the basement.
