A young girl was found wandering the streets outside her Canarsie day care, and the Administration for Children's Services and Department of Education is now getting involved.

Nichole Michel says she went to pick up her daughter, 3-year-old Nia, from the Raven Learning Center at the usual time on Monday. Outside the facility, she saw a young girl walk past and realized it was her daughter, who had somehow been allowed to leave the facility.

As News 12 has reported, the child told her mother that the staff at the school had called her name and she went outside to look for her mother.

Michel says she entered the school looking for answers, but none of the staff could explain how or why Nia had been able to leave the premises.

Michel says workers at the educational facility tried to make excuses for the error. The DOE says the safety and security of students is a top priority.

Nia will not be heading back to school at Raven, but Michel does, however, want the learning center to make changes and prevent the same thing from happening to another child.

Maria Callendar, the executive director of Raven, says the center will not comment on the accusations until the investigation is completed.
