Brooklyn is one step closer to a new plan to get rid of its own trash.
The City Council approved Mayor Bloomberg?s (R-NY) waste management plan Wednesday. Under the plan, the city?s trash will be shipped away on barges rather than trucks. The plan makes each borough responsible for its own trash and trash removal.
Once the new system is in place, the trash picked up curbside will be taken to waterfront transfer stations. From the marine stations, barges will then take the garbage to secondary transfer terminals, where it will be moved to out-of-state landfills. Two of the marine stations will be located in Brooklyn. Community Board 7 now has concerns about the amount of truck traffic near the proposed Hamilton Avenue waterfront waste station.
