? The City Council called for the electrical system on Bronx and city streets to be upgraded at a hearing Friday. This comes after several pedestrians were killed or shocked.
Last month, stray voltages killed a dog and injured a woman. Council members said engineers need to proactively inspect manholes, electric boxes and light posts rather than wait for someone to be hurt. Officials say inspections especially need to occur after salt has been spread since the salt corrodes wires and sets off sparks. A Con Edison representative testified the company is implementing an electronic system to monitor streetlights throughout the city.
The Department of Transportation also plans to paint all streetlights with insulating paint to reduce stray voltages.
