The community of City Island rallied together Saturday after racist and antisemitic mail was sent to at least three local businesses.
Several weeks ago, Seafood Kingz, Caliente’s and Archie’s Tap & Table received a racist and antisemitic cartoon sketch targeting Black and Jewish communities.
Seafood Kingz also confirmed that it received a second discriminatory letter containing slurs and a drawing of a swastika on Thursday.
That letter stated in part, “You decided to call the news... The Nazi party has resurrected. We have agents everywhere. Hail Hitler.”
Seafood Kingz, which said it is the only Black-owned seafood and soul food establishment on the island, held a news conference to send the message that they are not backing down and encourage patrons to show support.
"Any threats against Seafood Kingz is against workers and my family,” said the restaurant’s owner.
"We don't want his business to be hampered by what went on, so again we're just showing our support,” said one conference attendee.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez also attended the conference and spoke out against racism.
"This is not City Island, and this will never be City Island,” she said. “We have been in contact with local businesses that have been affected in trying to deploy any resources necessary to support any investigative pursuits to find who is responsible."
Authorities have said there is an ongoing investigation about the letters.
