Flags across the city are flying at half-staff today for the two police officers who were gunned down over the weekend in Brooklyn.
Police say officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were eating lunch inside their patrol car, when 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley ambushed them. They say following the shooting, Brinsley ran into a nearby subway station and committed suicide.
As the NYPD and the city continue to mourn, the flags will remain at half-staff until the officers are laid to rest.
A memorial for Ramos and Liu located at the spot where they were shot in their patrol car is continuing to grow with candles, flowers and photos.
Both Ramos and Liu not only served in Brooklyn, but they also called it home. Outside Lui's home in Gravesend, several of his friends who lived with him in China stopped by his memorial to remember him.
At Ramos' childhood home in Cypress Hills, loved ones lit candles and bowed their heads in prayer. Ramos' family says he was a loving father and husband who loved his job, and even wanted to become a clergyman. Ramos' family is now calling for unity between the community and police.
Despite all of the tensions circulating, Ramos' cousin says the family would be content with Mayor De Blasio attending his funeral.
