State and local officials are taking action to keep residents safe amidst hot and humid temperatures.

While people flocked to beaches and pools, Norwalk activated cooling centers across the city.

"Heat index values of this kind can cause heat-related illnesses among humans and animals," Mayor Harry Rilling said in a release. "I urge everyone to stay hydrated and seek out cool environments.”

The Norwalk Public Library's main branch on Belden Avenue is one of the cooling centers activated.

"We know what can happen in extreme cases, so while we're very happy to do it, we take it very seriously," Library Director Sherelle Harris told News 12 Connecticut. "We are lucky to have a mayor who thinks about people who may be out in the extreme heat or the extreme cold."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous activity during the middle of the day.

Mayor Rilling says the Norwalk Police Department community room is a cooling center open 24/7.
