Overall crime shrank by 1.7 percent in 2015, and 5.8 percent over the last five years, according to statistics provided by the NYPD.
But so-called major crimes, which include murder, rape and robbery, increased. There were 17 more murders in 2015 than 2014, up 4.5 percent. There was one more rape reported in Brooklyn North precincts in 2015, but 16 more reported in Brooklyn South, part of a 6 percent increase citywide.
Robberies also increased by 2 percent, with subway robberies fueling an 11 percent increase in transit crimes.
