The city is one step closer to bringing a new look to Atlantic Avenue.

Through the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan, the rezoning proposal would bring 4,600 new homes along a 21-block stretch. A total of 1,440 of those will be “income-restricted.”

At a Wednesday City Planning Commission public hearing, leaders also said the mixed-use plan will generate more than 2,000 jobs for the revamped commercial and community facility uses.

The neighborhoods impacted by the plan include northern Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy and Prospect Heights.

Community members said their hope is that the city does not lose sight of the growing need for affordable housing.

“I am now living in a rent stabilized unit for a really affordable price and a nice building,” said Michael Roberts. “So I'm all for it if they want to continue building those buildings around the Atlantic Avenue area. It's definitely changed my life for sure, and I know it would benefit a lot of people.”

Most of the zoning in the AAMUP area has gone unchanged since the 1960s. A key reason why council members say change is long overdue — especially given its proximity to mass transit, retail, schools and more.

The city's Planning Commission is still asking for the public's feedback and written comments on the plan until Feb. 18., before it is pushed forward to the City Council.
