Neighbors were left surprised in Sunset Park when they discovered there were refrigerated trucks with dead bodies parked in a lot in their neighborhood.
The city tells News 12 it is one of four disaster morgue sites across the city.
The lot where these trucks are stretches from 36th Street to 39th Street along 2nd Avenue.
A spokesperson for the city tells News 12 this is part of their overall effort to expand more capacity. They say the federal government has been supporting operations at this location and the others.
In addition to housing bodies, News 12 is told it’s also a long-term storage. Other media outlets are reporting that the trucks were not at full capacity as of Monday.
Citywide, the mayor’s office says more than 18,900 people have died as a result of COVID-19.
