The city is working to clean up Brooklyn after a confirmed tornado tore though the borough Wednesday morning.

City crews were out clearing trees and limbs knocked down by powerful winds. Con Edison crews were fixing utility poles and downed power lines.

Meanwhile, officials said four houses have been condemned. The Red Cross is helping families from those houses. The city's Office of Emergency Management has set up an assistance center at P.S. 314 at 330 59th Ave.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer said the city is working to keep the lines of communication open with affected residents, saying it's key to get the word out about the situation as soon as possible.

State Sen. Martin Golden is calling on FEMA to declare a state of emergency in Bay Ridge so it can qualify for federal aid to rebuild. Some early estimates put the storm damage into the tens of millions of dollars.
