The city?s first ?super-principal? took the reigns at ACORN High School for Social Justice in Bushwick Friday.

The Department of Education?s executive principal program was created to turn around failing schools in the city.

ACORN students complained last year of not having textbooks and computers. For months, they rallied against their former principal, who resigned in December. The DOE hired Karen Watts to become ACORN?s executive principal.

DOE officials say Watts was hired because of her successful leadership at a school in Harlem. Many students and staff at ACORN hope Watts can bring that success to their school.

As part of the program, Watts stands to earn a bonus of $25,000 a year for committing to the failing school for three years. The DOE says offering the bonus to executive principals helps it attract top talent to schools most in need.
