The city's new school chancellor is expected to visit schools in Brooklyn Tuesday.

Officials say that it is part of a weeklong tour, which includes spending a full day in each borough.

Richard Carranza started the week touring schools in the Bronx. He met with pre-K students at the Concourse Village Elementary School before traveling to other institutions, including the James Monroe Campus, where he threw out the first pitch of Monday's baseball game.

Carranza says that he spent his first week diving into policy issues and talking to education officials.

As a former teacher and principal, Carranza was the Houston schools superintendent before taking over Carmen Farina's post in New York City.

"I also think it's really important having come from a very humble background myself to have that diversity of experience as well, because that's kind of what makes a public school system a public school system," he said.
