A wearable device that tells doctors if their hands are clean has come to a hospital in Brooklyn.

The staff at SUNY Downstate Medical Center has been using the Bio Vigil device, which alerts them if they need to wash their hands.

It's all in effort to stop the spread of harmful bacteria and germs, including the flu virus.

Doctors wear the small device attached to their shirt and intermittently place their hands over it to check if they are clean.

The device displays a green icon which lets the recipient know their hands are clean, a yellow light indicates a reminder to wash their hands, and a red light means they must wash their hands immediately.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center  is the first hospital in New York to use the devices.
