Rallygoers say the Clean Slate Act would help individuals who served time in prison support their families by improving access to jobs, housing and education.
One woman at the rally said her and her family’s prior convictions have made it difficult to pass background checks.
"My mother was incarcerated. We were not allowed in NYCHA. Then I was incarcerated. I had three children that I couldn't care for properly. I couldn't offer them a better life because of a prior conviction. My son was also incarcerated, and I'm scared he may have to go through what I did if this doesn't pass,” she said.
Lawmakers are hopeful that the Clean Slate Act will pass in Albany before the end of the legislative session on June 8.
