Residents in Clinton Hill say they are fed up with large groups of teens crowding bus stops and running into traffic near Benjamin Banneker Academy.
Some neighbors even avoided going outside during dismissal hours.
“They jump in front of seniors when the bus comes. They don’t give them a chance to get on,” said Michael, a longtime resident.
Others say the situation was becoming dangerous, not just for neighbors, but for the students, too.
“If you’re a driver like myself, you’re concerned about hitting these kids,” said Michelle, another neighbor. “Even when they’re not fighting, they’re screaming. It’s very disruptive.”
Residents told News 12 that no one was supervising the students.
After residents reached out to News 12 after what they claimed was a fight that broke out inside a crowd of teens near the bus stop at Myrtle and Waverly Avenue last week, News 12 reached out to the school and the 88th Precinct to ask what was being done.
While the school did not respond directly, administrators were seen walking with students after dismissal. Neighbors say the increased presence made a difference.
“Maybe because News 12 called and highlighted it, they showed up,” said Michelle Williams. “Speaking to the kids, walking with them, keeping it calm, it shows they care.”
The NYPD confirmed to News 12 that the corner is a priority post for the 88th Precinct. Officers are stationed there every school day from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and work with school staff.
But residents tell News 12 they don't recall seeing an increase in police and school presence prior to last week, for an issue they say has been present for years.
“Just [administrators] being there, seeing them interact with the children, talking with them, it’s what we want to see,” Williams said adding, " I'd want them out there everyday."
