New York City beaches officially reopened Saturday with lifeguards on duty, but the rainy weather kept residents inside.
Starting this weekend, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Officials warn that swimming is unsafe and strictly not allowed at all other times.
Lifeguards at Orchard Beach were all bundled up against the elements of rain and cold temperatures.
Harsh waves were hitting the coast at Orchard Beach as well, which is why the National Weather Service issued an advisory for coastal flooding with a high risk of rip currents all weekend long.
Forecasters say high tide will be hitting the coast with half a foot of flooding in the Bronx from midnight to 5 a.m. and in Brooklyn from midnight until 2 a.m. That flooding could happen above ground level and near the waterfront.
Orchard Beach is one of eight public beaches that opened for the summer which also includes Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn.
Meantime, Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced that city beaches will have pop-up vaccination sites this weekend.
Although the rain is expected to continue this weekend, the beaches will be open for the rest of the spring and summer for residents to enjoy.
