2h agoThe multimillion-dollar restoration of the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park is finally complete after nearly 2 years.
The community showed out Friday to celebrate its reopening. The city and the Prospect Park Alliance are hoping to reimagine the house, turning it into a museum to honor African and Native American ancestors.
The house is an 18th century farmhouse that originally recognized the Lefferts family who once lived there, as well as the slaves they owned and the land the house sits upon, which was previously owned by the Lenapehoking tribe.
City officials cut the ribbon to celebrate a new era for the house, complete with a newly improved roof and wooden shingles. They’re hoping to add programming that will explore stories of resistance by African slaves and the Lenape tribe.
