A community is keeping the memory of Lesandro Guzman-Feliz on what would have been his 19th birthday.
A Mass was held Thursday in remembrance of Guzman-Feliz, also known as ‘Junior’, at Mount Carmel Church.
While this is her fourth year celebrating Guzman-Feliz’s birthday without him, his mother, Leandra Feliz, says it does not get any easier.
Guzman-Feliz was killed three years ago when he was just 15 years old in a brutal gang attack due to an apparent case of mistaken identity.
His family and friends are not letting that tragic day define his life as they visited him at Saint Raymond New Cemetery.
At the Mass, over two dozen people showed up in support of Guzman-Feliz.
"They help me to be standing up here. They give me the strength because they make me feel like I have them and they make me strong to continue getting justice for Junior because that kind of abuse we have to stop. we all need prayers, life or death because we know this world but we don't know the other side of the world,” said Feliz.
Feliz says moving forward, there is still so much more to be done when it comes to getting justice - not just for her son, but for others who have found themselves to be victims of violent crimes.
