Members of a Newark youth football organization held a balloon release in memory of a 10-year-old boy killed in a shooting this past weekend.
The event was held in honor of Jordan Garcia and was organized by the West Ward Hawks. The group’s mission is to provide a safe haven for children in the Brick City.
The shooting happened Saturday night along Chancellor Avenue in Newark’s South Ward. Kia Mae Scott, 21, was also killed. Three other people were injured in the shooting – including Garcia’s 11-year-old brother.
The brother and a 60-year-old man are in stable condition. A 19-year-old who was also injured is listed in critical condition.
Newark officials and community leaders have expressed their outrage in the wake of the shooting - both for the tragic loss of life and also because the suspected shooter or shooters remain on the loose.
There has been some progress in the investigation. A law enforcement source tells News 12 that, after a pursuit early Monday evening, police recovered a car that was involved in the shooting. The source says two people were arrested after that chase - but not for involvement in the shooting. Police also recovered a weapon from the car.
There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. All calls will remain confidential, according to officials.
