A New Jersey community is coming together to remember three members of a family killed in a crash on Route 9 in Monmouth County over the Fourth of July weekend.
The crash happened July 3 in Freehold. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office says a 74-year-old woman sideswiped two cars before rear-ending a Honda CRV. Authorities say that everyone inside that Honda was killed. They have been Identified as Masoud and Hanaa Salib, and their son Mark. Son Danny Salib was not inside the car at the time of the crash and is the only immediate surviving family member.
Authorities say Mark Salib was driving the Honda at the time of the crash. He died from his injuries on Tuesday. His parents died on Sunday shortly after the crash.
Mark Salib played for four years on the Colts Neck High School football team. Coach Matt Ahearn remembers him well. Ahearn joined the staff during Mark Salib’s senior year.
“That first game they won against Monmouth Regional, it was a big game for them. They were very excited, especially Mark. I remember Mark running around the field with his helmet in his hands looking full of life and very excited they won that game,” Ahearn says.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by a family friend raised more than $130,000 for Danny Salib in less than 24 hours.
“It shows how it hit everybody. It hit home. You know, you lost your parents, your brother and now his other brother is in medical school. Trying to navigate through that and now has to deal with this kind of situation. It shows everyone’s outpouring, trying to make him feel better. Somehow, some way to support him,” Ahearn says.
Services for the Salib family were scheduled for Thursday evening and Friday morning at the Saint Mina Coptic Church in Holmdel.
