Students, teachers and parents said emotional goodbyes Friday as Saint Anthony-Saint Alphonsus Roman Catholic school shut its doors for good in Greenpoint.
Parents question the decision to close the school and call it a political move, rather than one with the children?s best interest in mind. Officials say nine students at the Greenpoint school will enter the public school system, while the majority, 107, will attend other Catholic schools. Teachers are also considering their next move.
The archdiocese in Brooklyn will retain the property and will possibly lease it. Saint Anthony-Saint Alphonsus is one of several Catholic schools to close in Brooklyn in a statewide realignment. The archdiocese maintains low enrollment and financial strain led to closures.
