A former NYPD captain organized a campaign of citywide candlelight vigils for Wednesday to show appreciation for fallen police officers during this year's National Police Week.

In the last six months, five NYPD officers were shot, three of them fatally.

Retired Capt. Joe Concannon says he founded the Square Deal Committee in January as a way for community members to show support for their local police.

"Light a candle, or turn on a flashlight," Concannon says. "Just hang your head in a moment of silence in recognition of those men and women who quite frankly have given their lives so that we can do what we're doing right now."

The vigils are expected to be held throughout the nation, Concannon says. To participate in one locally, he says to contact your local precinct community council.
