Con Edison is investing $1.3 billion to build a new substation in Canarsie, and it’s expected to impact more than 50,000 customers across Brooklyn.
“It really feels good to be part of a project that’s not only adding additional capacity to the system, but it’s bringing renewable energy to the system,” said Antonio Corchado, the project manager.
The environmentally friendly facility is expected to create a low-carbon footprint while handling high-voltage power and help to keep your lights on.
“This substation is going to make the power grid in Brooklyn much more resilient to power outages,” said Corchado.
That includes outages during major storms and heat waves, so Con Ed is trenching 15 miles worth of waterproof and insulated equipment.
“The fact that so much of it is below ground, in the event of a storm, a lot of it is protected from the elements above,” Corchado said.
Corchado told News 12 that the new substation is also reliable for the overall, everyday need at a time when people are using more electricity and more buildings are being built.
“That’s already increasing the demand for the power in Brooklyn,” said Corchado. “So, this [substation] is a way of meeting that demand.”
Corchado said construction is on schedule and expected to be completed in 2028.
