Coney Island Houses receive flood-proof boilers
NYCHA's Coney Island Houses received new boilers Tuesday, the latest part of a flooding recovery effort across the city.
The new, 15-ton boilers sit atop a raised platform to prevent floodwaters from damaging them the way they did during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The larger $67 million project also includes flood-proofing panels and backup generators on the roof in the Coney Island Houses. As a whole, the city will spend $3.2 billion on similar improvements across 33 NYCHA complexes.
Some of the construction workers who performed the boiler installation are NYCHA residents.
