Coney Island mom says son with disability left on bus after school trip
A Coney Island mother says her son, who has a disability, was left on a bus after a school trip on Thursday.
Jennifer Smith says her 8-year-old son, Blake Everette, fell asleep on the bus and slipped underneath the seats. She doesn't know exactly how long her son was left there, but she says she's upset the school didn't contact her right away.
Smith learned about it from a friend, and then she called the school, P.S. 329 Surfside. She says someone told her they didn't want her to get nervous.
Smith believes her son was driven back to a bus depot before the school realized the error. Blake says it was "scary" waking up to an empty bus.
The young boy walks with a limp and requires a paraprofessional aide. But the aide was not with him, which is required.
A Department of Education spokesperson says in a statement: "Students deserve a safe ride to school and parents deserve timely and accurate information about their child, and we will investigate this disturbing allegation. We'll take any necessary follow-up action."
Smith says she's considering moving her son to a different school.
