Coney Island's Parachute Jump lit up gold Friday night in honor of September being Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.
The display is part of the Gold World Project, which raises awareness for childhood cancer at locations around the world.
Coney Island stepped in for the Empire State Building, which rejected a request to have the building lit in gold. A representative says the request was made by an individual, not a group, which goes against its application rules. City Councilman Mark Treyger then approached the owners of the Parachute Jump to go gold instead.
Pediatric cancer survivors and their families were at Coney Island Friday to view the Parachute Jump and they tell News 12 Brooklyn they appreciate the gesture.
