Cooling centers were opened in the borough to help residents beat the heat this weekend as temperatures soared into the upper 90s.
The cooling centers were opened as a result of the heat wave that baked the region. Center directors told News 12 The Bronx that many will remain open Monday as the hot and sticky forecast continues.
"I was gonna go to the Puerto Rican Day Parade, but it's too hot so I came here," says Nilda Rivera, a resident who took advantage of a center to cool down.
Rivera hung out with friends in the air conditioned Rain Senior Center on East Tremont Avenue. The gang played bingo, socialized and enjoyed some free meals at the center.
Residents are being advised to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities as the heat wave continues through Tuesday.
