One of two police officers shot in Crown Heights was released from Kings County Hospital Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
Officer Herman Yan, 26, was shot in the chest and arm while approaching a stolen SUV around 2:30 a.m. in Crown Heights. Yan and his partner, 23-year-old Officer Russel Timoshenko, discovered the vehicle was stolen after running the license plate number.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg credited Yan's bulletproof vest with saving his life. However, Timoshenko, who was shot twice in the head, remains in critical condition at the same hospital.
"Prayer for Officer Timoshenko might be in order," Bloomberg said. "[He] was trying to protect the rest of us and is in very grave condition."Police arrested 29-year-old Lee Woods Tuesday. Investigators are seeking two other men, Dexter Bostic and Robert Ellis, both 34, in connection with the shootings.
Investigators later recovered the vehicle and weapons a few blocks from the scene. Authorities said a camera at a nearby day care captured the incident, however, the video is too grainy to be of any use.
Sources told News 12 Brooklyn Tuesday evening that one of the suspects was holed up inside St. Dominic's Church on Unionport Road in the Bronx. Although a police presence started to form at the church, News 12 was unable to confirm whether one of the men was there. Authorities later left the scene.
According to police, Bostic goes by the alias of Marcus Jackson. He is also a former employee of the Long Island car dealership where the SUV was stolen.
The reward for information leading to arrests and convictions in the case is now at $64,000. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
