A Williamsburg man who police say shot an officer in the ankle is being charged with attempted murder.Police say the incident happened Tuesday near the corner of Dean Street and Flatbush Avenue. They say Officer Rory Mangra, 27, was with another officer when they spotted Kinsley Newland and another person smoking marijuana. Police say Newland opened fire on Mangra after he approached him.Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says Newland has an extensive drug record and is connected to a Brooklyn gang. He was also charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana.Mangra was taken to New York Methodist Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
