Starting this week, drivers in New Jersey need a
membership to refuel their vehicles at the wholesale club Costco - except one location.
There are 15 Costco locations in New Jersey and this membership rule is true for all of them, except the Costco in Mount Laurel.
The reason dates back to a zoning board hearing over nine years ago when Costco asked Mount Laurel Township to begin selling gas at their store.
A letter from township attorney George Morris to Costco explains, "Before the Zoning Board, your client’s witnesses provided testimony that the proposed gas fueling station would be open to all consumers, not just Costco members. Costco is hereby placed on notice that any restrictions on who may purchase gas would directly contradict the representations made to the Zoning Board and violate the variance approval.”
Costco declined to provide any comment to News 12.
