After a cell phone storage truck was robbed Tuesday at Columbus High School, a city councilman is calling on the Department of Education (DOE) to allow students to bring their cell phones into the school.
Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Astoria) is calling on the DOE to allow students to keep their cell phones in their lockers or backpacks, instead of paying to keep them in a truck just off school grounds.
A DOE spokesperson says that despite the recent robbery, there is no plan to rescind the current cell phone ban.
