Brooklyn Councilmember Inna Vernikov responded to what she described as a “horrific atmosphere” at a Sheepshead Bay high school.
Vernikov met with other local leaders to speak out against the school’s principal and the Department of Education, stating that both students and teachers have been forced to suffer through antisemitism at Origins High School.
“Not only has there been no discipline and nothing has been done about the safety of these two individuals and others, but the principal made complaints in retaliation because they are speaking out,” said Vernikov.
The Department of Education said that “Principal Kammerman has a track record of building bridges across an incredibly diverse school community and supporting students, staff, and families.” Sources within the DOE say that there is no evidence that any incidents at the school have been left unaddressed – which Vernikov doesn’t buy.
“Seeing the response from the DOE where they say that 'the principal and the administration are great, they're doing a wonderful job, they've been dealing with everything that's happening with the school'... at this point they're just gaslighting us. These are lies."
