No more violence! That was the message elected officials and community leaders sent during a rally in Crown Heights Wednesday.
Councilwoman Letitia James spoke at the gun violence protest, which was held at St. Marks and Kingston avenues. James and other leaders promised to work with police and the community to reclaim the streets.
"We cannot ask the police to do everything in our community," a resident said. "We need participation from our black men in our community."
The rally comes after a stray bullet struck 12-year-old Kimberly Desvignes in her side August 27. The calm girl, who later recovered, quickly led her little brother to safety at a nearby bodega.
James is offering a $1,000 reward for information on the shooting.
