Couple claims building management won't allow wife on lease
A couple living in the Spring Creek Towers claims that management is looking to give them the boot.
Ira and Shoshana Bernstein stood outside their building's management office for hours Tuesday, demanding that staff help them add Shoshana to the lease.
According to the couple, Ira lived in the building with his ex-wife in 1981. He eventually divorced but returned in 1990 to take care of his children. Then in 2007, he married Shoshana. Since then, both have attempted to add her name to the lease.
Spring Creek Towers management claims the couple is not legally married, even though they have a City of New York marriage license. Management has told the Bernsteins that Shoshana has bad credit, but she claims rent is always paid and that the debt is from her husband's medical bills.
"Legal action is being pursued because the regulators, HUD and DHCR, require all occupants and their income information be reported on an annual basis," Spring Creek said in a statement. "The tenant of record did not comply with the regulations or his lease agreement. The regulators concur with this action."
The Bernsteins plan to continue rallying and writing to every local elected official in the hopes it might help their cause.
