The first American woman to enter space was honored in Nassau County Friday.
The Cradle of Aviation Museum unveiled a sculpture of Dr. Sally Ride.
Ride was the youngest American to soar into space aboard the Challenger and the first American woman in space.
"Sally Ride didn't know she was going to be an astronaut, she didn't know she was going to be the first woman in space," said Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips. "An opportunity came about, and she applied."
Following two trips to space, Ride founded her own company called Sally Ride Science. It motivates girls and young women to pursue careers in the STEM field.
