Black and Jewish community leaders came together Sunday in a sign of unity to discuss how to eliminate violence between the two communities in the borough.

The meeting came days after a protest by members of the Jewish community. They blocked traffic Friday at the site where 16-year-old Alon Sherman was beaten last week. The teenager was allegedly beaten and robbed by two black teens.

The incident is not the first case of racial tension in the area. Last month, police say a black man was attacked and beaten with a stick by a group of Jewish men.

Attendees agreed police foot patrols need to be stepped up in the community. Leaders also pledged a commitment to providing more extracurricular activities for both black and Jewish youths to keep them out of trouble.
