New pop-up vaccination sites are
opening across the city as Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues to urge those eligible
to get the vaccine.
Cuomo says the state’s goal is to
open vaccination sites at 300 churches and all 33 NYCHA senior housing
developments.
The Bethany Baptist Church in
Bed-Stuy is one church where the governor says the vaccine will be available
starting Tuesday.
He says there is a lack of trust
in the vaccine, especially in communities of color.
A
recently released survey found that two in five Black Americans say they would
not get a coronavirus vaccine.
Cuomo spoke virtually with
members of Bethany Baptist Church Sunday, where he stressed that the vaccine is
safe.
“We all need to trust the
vaccine,” the governor said.
He also visited the William Reid
Houses Saturday, where he launched another pop-up vaccination site.
Cuomo is calling on community
leaders to help convince those who are eligible and skeptical to trust the
vaccine.
The
governor, however, admits that New York does not have the amount of vaccine
doses coming in as it needs.
The
FDNY and NYPD stopped giving out doses of the vaccine to officers because of
the lack of supply.
Cuomo
says a shipment of around 240,000 doses is coming this week.
He says
it will take months to vaccinate the 7 million people eligible for vaccines now
if the federal government does not ramp up production.
Cuomo
says they are still attempting to get vaccines where they are needed most.
