Daniel Nigro was sworn in as the city's fire commissioner at FDNY headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn Monday morning.
He is the 33rd person to serve as fire commissioner since the post was created. His swearing-in ceremony took place aboard a firetruck from his first firehouse, Ladder 21.
"I'm honored to be fire commissioner," said Nigro. "I think for someone whose life has been the fire department, it's the greatest thing that can happen to you."
Nigro served as chief of the department following the Sept. 11 attacks, overseeing recovery and rescue operations at the World Trade Center.
The new commissioner started his career as a firefighter in 1969. He is one of six members of the FDNY that has held every rank in the department.
