The man accused of stabbing a 6-year-old boy to death and seriously hurting a 7-year-old girl appeared in court briefly on Wednesday.
Daniel St. Hubert asked to address the court, and the judge denied his request.
Kings County District Attorney Ken Thompson announced a five-count indictment against St. Hubert, which includes a second-degree murder charge. A grand jury voted on the indictment.
Police say the 27-year-old attacked the children, Prince Joshua Avitto, or PJ, and his friend Mikayla Capers, in the elevator of their East New York building more than a week ago.
Investigators are also looking into whether Hubert is connected to two other stabbings, including one that led to the death of 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland, also in East New York, and another that injured a man in Chelsea.
After his appearance, St. Hubert was taken back to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Once doctors determine that St. Hubert is well enough, he will return to general population at Riker's Island, according to his attorney.
The lawyer says St. Hubert's next appearance will be in 2-3 weeks, when he is expected to enter a plea.
