A Darien High school senior is at the top of her game. It wasn't easy, though, after not one but two setbacks.

Chloe Humphrey and the Darien girls lacrosse team just finished an undefeated regular season that earned them the top spot in the nation.

"We've had one of the hardest schedules I think across the country, so we've really proven our dominance not only in Connecticut but nationally," said Humphrey.

On top of that, Humphrey is the No. 1 girls lacrosse player in the country.

"Her work ethic and competitive drive I think is what really separates her and puts her in the elite players," said her father, John Humphrey.

But two years ago, Humphrey wasn't sure she'd still be able to play. She had back surgery. Then last year Humphrey had a stress fracture in her hip.

"I had surgery done. I had a titanium screw put into it in October," said Humphrey.

Her will to win and be a success got her back on the field. It's made all the difference.

Humphrey is going to play lacrosse at North Carolina, like her sister Nicole who just graduated.

"Ever since I picked up a lacrosse stick, the dream's always been to play for Carolina and wear the Carolina Blue," said Humphrey.

Humphrey comes from an athletic family. Her other sister Ashley plays lacrosse at Stanford. Her mother played at Dartmouth. Dad played basketball at Middlebury College. He hasn't missed any of his four kids games.

"It's been an unbelievable ride. We're very blessed. They've given me so much joy," said her father.

The conference playoffs begin this week for the Darien girls lacrosse team, with hopes Humphrey can bring an FCIAC and state title back to the Blue Wave.

North Carolina is the defending women’s lacrosse national champion.
