Deep Dive: The impact working at home, new variant have on commuting in New Jersey

Many companies have been shifting to a work at home model once again with the new variant, and you may have noticed the impact it’s having on commuting.
In this week's Deep Dive, News 12's Kristie Reeter is taking a deep dive into traffic stats to see what the trends on the roads and rails have been.
In a News 12 poll, New Jersey residents were asked: What public transportation do you rely on the most? A majority said that they don't take public transportation.
With Google, you are able to do some tracking of where people are heading. Caleb Silver, with Investopedia, took a look at the data.
"Well the data will back you up Kristie,” says Silver. “We are using Google mobility which knows when we are going to work and when we are coming home and in every major county we track in New Jersey we see that commuting to work is down more than 40%. In Monmouth County, it's down 42.2%, Bergen, down 42.6%, Hudson 44.3%, and Morris County down 45.6%, so you are not wrong in what you are observing."
Just overall people going in and out of New Jersey what is that looking like so far in 2022?
"It's slowed a lot in just the past two weeks Kristie, traffic is down 18% on bridges and tunnels and when we look at subways, including the PATH, it's down 45%, up from 59% just a few weeks ago, so there has been a big slowdown in just the past two weeks as we begin the year,” says Silver.
